Serving up a hot plate of hate!
Families really sit around the table putting other ethnicities down for things like melanin or geographical origin, which are entirely out of the control of people not like them. You have to be a special kind of miserable or insecure to continuously mind the business of someone else who wants the same or better than you for themselves and their families… and then go so far as to actually blame them for your station in life!
I mean, how limiting is it to just eat one type of food and deprive yourselves of the wonderful spices and herbs that many cultures have to offer? (This does not count tacos. I could be limited to tacos for the rest of my life and not feel deprived of anything else.) To me, it’s the same with people. I’m so grateful for my military brat days. I got to know about many cultures through their food first and then learn about their practices and belief systems. We all have to eat to sustain these bodies, hearts, and minds of ours. Food brings people together and makes learning about differences…well… digestible. You can break down so many barriers by sharing a meal. Especially ones prepared with love and pride.
Don’t let the food touch!
After all, food is comfort, at least in my family. Certain flavors and textures mixed together just touch the soul, spread warmth, and settle the spirit. I like a little sweet potato on my mac n cheese, or some mashed potatoes and gravy with my greens.
Ya know what, no wonder they’re mad and hateful. The absence of seasoning, or gravy, or warm bread with a meal that took a full day to come together. Not knowing what it is to have a meal cooked with thoughtfulness, love, and prayers of gratitude to nourish and bless would make me mad at the world too.
Their soul is hungry
I can see why some are looking at the world, pissed off from living such a bland life. No wonder some think it’s just white & black (salt and pepper). They forgot about all the things in between. Like cayenne, turmeric, garlic, cilantro, cumin, oregano, paprika, lemon pepper, Cajun seasoning, jollof seasoning, and curry powders. There’s an entire spectrum of people, I mean, seasonings that spice up life and make it worth living!
Yes, you can be proud of your salt. It’s a flavor enhancer but doesn’t thrive on its own. Too much of it can ruin a meal. Pepper provides balance. That’s why both are always made available. But those two, with other seasonings and herbs, really make this life, I mean a meal, come together.
