When Do Men Stop Objectifying Women? Not at 76!

There I was sitting in the doctor’s office with my father, Big Red, about to get an answer to a question I’ve been asking as of late: when do men stop objectifying women? We were seated parallel to the receptionist’s desk, in the only two seats available when you first walk through the door. Directly across from us sat the remainder of the patients in the larger part of the waiting room. On this day, the doctor’s office was packed, and he was running behind, and all seats were occupied. This gave us ample time to scope out the room and people-watch. Except I didn’t realize how much he and I were doing it because we weren’t talking about much of anything as we waited.

Until…

The next patient was called back. I noticed her because of her hairstyle. It was very pretty. She had very long locs that were styled into individual braids, and they cascaded down her shoulders. If she wasn’t sitting so far across the room from me, I would’ve complemented her on her hairstyle. Then, when she stood up, I also liked the outfit that she had on. It was a matching denim sleeveless top and bottoms that were blinged out. Very demure. Very feminine. Again, I would’ve complimented her on everything because that’s just what I do. Even the nurse who called her back noticed and complimented her on her summer look.

Then out of nowhere and without anyone asking him, my seventy-six-year-old father loudly says, “Nah! I wouldn’t hit that.” I was immediately appalled. Like number one, who asked you? And number one, why would you even think she was checking for you? Sir! You have no chance with this woman. You can’t even walk, and you’re not in the best shape. And he was so loud! I scanned the room to see if anyone heard him, and it didn’t seem as if they had, or they were simply ignoring his delusional ass.

Anyway, in my absolute mortification, I reached out to my brothers via text to tell them about the phuckery that just occurred.

I went on to tell them why I was so appalled by his behavior, especially because just the day before, he told me that he actually censors himself. I said no you don’t! “Yes, I do! “I actually don’t say most of what I’m thinking,” Dad replied. “Pshaw! All my life you did. You ain’t never held back!” I retorted and added a scoff! (I like words; look it up)

When I told my brothers about his supposed censorship, Baby Bubba said, “Nigga please!”

That is simply not the childhood experience that we had.

My dad was definitely a phuck your feelings kind of guy and said whatever came to mind. Mind you, I’m the only girl of three kids. He treated me just like one of his sons. Crying was not an option for me, right along with my brothers.

But back to this story. I’m just too down-to-earth or something. I don’t want men to be that comfortable around me to just openly objectify another woman and think that’s okay. The only reason I didn’t go off on Dad yesterday is that I don’t like drawing attention to myself, but I was really pissed, and I really wanted to call him out.

When do men stop that behavior?

Like, come on! Grow up! My dad is 76, and he’s still doing it. Women do not exist just for men’s visual or physical pleasure alone. And it’s crazy because a man can be busted down, unkempt & disheveled, sloppy body, wear raggedy clothes, and be downright unappealing in every way, and will still police a woman’s body as if she hasn’t done enough to meet some standard that he hasn’t even set for himself. GTFOH

(Did I miss any other adjectives, ladies?)

*exhale*

Anyway, I guess payback came when he got back in a room and had his scan performed by a woman who looked as old as him, who hurt him when she had to press in a sensitive area repeatedly. He was writhing in pain and crying out. I did feel bad for him, but when she basically told him to “relax your muscles” so his body wouldn’t tense up and make it hurt even more, causing her to press harder, I admit I laughed a little on the inside. When it was over, I should’ve asked him would he do her.
